Article by

Allahumma adkhilhu ‘alayna bil amni wal iman, was salamati wal islam, wa jiwarim minash shaytan, wa ridwanim minar Rahman.

O Allah, bring this [month or year] upon us with security, iman, safety, Islam, protection from shaytan, and your pleasure. Ameen

Muharram has great significance in Islam for many reasons, and here are just a few:

  1. Muharram is the first month of the Islamic New Year – 1444 Hijri.
  2. Muharram is one of the four sacred months of Allah SWT – Muharram, Rajab, Dhul Qa’dah and Dhul Hijjah.

‘Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion, so do not wrong yourselves during them…’  Qur’an – Surah Al-Tawbah: 36

  1. Muharram literally means forbidden – our good and bad deeds weigh heavier in this month.
  2. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, ‘The best fasting after Ramadan is the Sacred Month of Allah (Muharram)…’ Hadith: Muslim
  3. Ashura comes from the root word Ashara. This takes place on the 10th of Muharram.

Benefits of Muharram

Our deeds carry more weight during the month of Muharram. Therefore, if we have the right intention, every good deed in this month will be greatly rewarded! Here is a list of good deeds we can do that will, In’Sha’Allah benefit you:

  1. “Assalamu’alaikum!” Always be the first to give Salam. Remember this is more than a greeting, it is a du’a for the person you are greeting!
  2. “O Allah, forgive me of my sins!” Our sins weigh heavier in this month, so take time out to ask Allah SWT for forgiveness of all your past sins!
  3. “I need to give Sadaqah!” Muharram is the beginning of the New Islamic Year. It’s the perfect time to give charity. You can even donate your Sadaqah to Islamic Centre of Britain!

Make the most of the sacred month of Muharram!
